MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WYMT) - Nearly 300 children received a special Christmas shopping spree on Tuesday!

The RoHo Fishing Club held its annual shopping trip at Walmart in Middlesboro.

296 children from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia participated. Each child had $150 total to spend, $110 on clothes and $40 on toys. Walmart also donated shoes for each child.

"We love being a part of a wonderful event for all these kids," said Doug Napier, Walmart Store Manager.

"It's great. It puts a smile on their face and you know they're going to have a happy Christmas. That's what it's all about," said Stephen Cambron, ROHO Member.

Volunteers from First Baptist Church of Middlesboro, First State Bank, Home Federal Bank, Mountain View Nursing and Rehab Center, Bell-Whitley, East End Pawn Shop, Community Trust, Kiwanis of Middlesboro, Pappy's, LMU Athletic Department, LMU-DCOM, Southeast Community and Technical College, Middlesboro ARH, and Middlesboro High School Key Club assisted the children with shopping.

Jamie McCune, President of RoHo, said the children participating often think of giving instead of receiving because they use the money to buy presents for siblings or parents.

"These kids are not selfish at all. They try to get things for brothers or sisters, or their mom or dad," McCune said in a news release.

The 296 kids got even more surprises! Santa visited the store and the Frozen characters also visited and took pictures with the kids.

"It's just a great day," said Napier.

The 80 RoHo members work all year collecting donations. Much of the money is raised at a fishing tournament in May.

Walmart managers started preparing for the event in September.

Organizers say all the work pays off when the children fill the carts.

"Just that they'll have a happy Christmas this year and that's what it's been about since day one, and that's really all you can ask for," said Cambron.

RoHo members say they collected enough donations this year to add even more children than year's past to the shopping trip.
